Learn, Teach, Inspire
Laura Hatcher (that's me – the proprietor of HDO) has been teaching as adjunct faculty in the design department of Towson University since 2002. – and I've loved every minute of it. Being in the classroom not only forces me to "practice what I preach" (and really define the preaching!), it's like creative "Red Bull." After spending 8 or so hours each week discussing ideas, concepts, aesthetics and theory from basic and obvious to advanced and esoteric, I leave creatively recharged and excited to take on my next challenge – which I often share with my students. I believe that my professional challenges and portfolio victories are among the most valuable assets I can bring to the collective table for new designers to learn from.
This past year, I have also started teaching Design Thinking at Maryland Institute College of Art (my Alma mater, and where I'm current Chair of the Alumni Council). Brian Hatcher and I have co-taught Design Thinking Workshops for MICA's MA/MBA graduate program in the Foundations of Design Thinking. To read more about our workshop, please click here.
If you'd like to connect to design fun outside the classroom, please visit "Design Detention," a facebook group I created as a way to communicate with past and present students on all things design-related. With 300+ members and growing, it is a fun, supportive and active community of fellow design nerds.
